Star Wars Rebels Renewed for Second Season Ahead of Premiere

Star Wars Rebels renewed

The Force is strong with producers Dave Filoni, Simon Kinberg and Greg Weisman as Disney XD has ordered up a second season of Star Wars Rebels ahead of the first season’s on-air premiere on Disney Channel.

The surprise early news came from Disney Channels Worldwide President and Chief Creative Officer Gary Marsh. “The global expectations for this series could not have been any higher,” stated Marsh in the official announcement. “And I am proud to say that the team at Lucasfilm has delivered something that has surpassed even that incredibly high bar – artistically and thematically.”

The one-hour Star Wars Rebels: Spark of the Rebellion premiere event debuted on Watch Disney XD this past Friday, offering registered users of the official Disney streaming platform a one-week head start on everyone else to watch the Star Wars Rebels series premiere online. Disney Channel has not provided viewership numbers for the sneak preview, but they likely served as the catalyst for the early renewal.

It has been strongly suggested that select characters and/or events in Star Wars Rebels will tie directly into Star Wars: Episode VII, currently in production with J.J. Abrams directing. Star Wars Rebels is considered part of the Star Wars cinematic cannon after a recent reorganization of the various media properties the eliminated the expanded universe outside of The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels as being cannon.

Star Wars Rebels: Spark of the Rebellion stars the voice talents of Freddie Prinze Jr., Taylor Gray, Tiya Sircar, Steve Blum and Vanessa Marshall. Star Wars Rebels: Spark of the Rebellion premieres on Disney Channel at 9/8c this Friday, October 3. The series will then shift to Disney XD for weekly new episodes starting on Monday, October 13 in the same time slot.

An encore performance of Star Wars Rebels: Spark of the Rebellion will air on Disney XD on Monday, October 6 at 9/8c.
