Carol Kane Joins Gotham Playing a Villain’s Mother

Fox’s Gotham has added veteran actress Carol Kane to the ensemble cast in a potentially villainous role that should allow her great acting range to shine through.

Kane, an Oscar-nominated actress best known for her work in Taxi, Annie Hall and as a mischievous ghost in Scrooged, will play the role of Gertrud Kapelput in Gotham. The role is recurring so she will be appearing in numerous episodes throughout the show’s first season.

If the last name Kapelput sounds close but not quite the same as Cobblepot then you’re on the right track. Gertrud is Oswald Cobblepot’s mother, which effectively makes her the Penguin’s mom.

Gertrud is described as being a “proud and faded beauty with delusions of grandeur,” which means her mental instability should play a role in Cobblepot’s descent into the criminal underworld.

Look for Carol Kane to make her Gotham debut in the second episode.
