The series is based on King’s book of the same name and gets underway in Episode 1 with Fish in a Barrel and a disturbing discovery, followed immediately by Episode 2 titled Roanoke.

The Outsider Season 1 Episode 1 Preview
The Outsider on HBO hits the ground running with a grizzly discovery. The body of an 11-year old boy turns up and the investigation quickly points toward multiple potential suspects in the murder.
The official synopsis for the first season reads, “The 10-episode series follows police detective Ralph Anderson (Ben Mendelsohn), as he sets out to investigate the mutilated body of 11-year-old Frankie Peterson found in the Georgia woods. The mysterious circumstances surrounding this horrifying crime leads Ralph, still grieving the recent death of his own son, to bring in unorthodox private investigator Holly Gibney (Cynthia Erivo), whose uncanny abilities he hopes will help explain the unexplainable.”
While the more specific Fish in a Barrel Episode 1 synopsis reads, “When the body of an 11-year-old boy is found in the Georgia woods, detective Ralph Anderson launches an investigation into the gruesome murder; eyewitnesses and physical evidence point to local teacher and baseball coach Terry Maitland.”
The Episode 2 synopsis for Roanoke reads, “Ralph admits to being baffled by conflicting physical evidence; an unexpected tragedy throws the investigation into a tailspin; Glory tries to soothe her daughter Jessa, who says she’s been visited by a strange man in her room at night.”
