Today has been quite the day for WarnerMedia and their HBO Max streaming service. First, the streaming app was added to PS5 consoles. Mere hours later and news has broken that an HBO Max and Roku deal as finally been struck.
Per the deal, the HBO Max app will become available to download and install on Roku devices beginning tomorrow, December 17th. The app will be available in the “New and Notable” and “Movies & TV” categories of the Roku channel store.
If you own a Roku device and already have the HBO app then that channel will automatically update to HBO Max when you first look at it tomorrow. The HBO Max app will utilize Roku Pay like many other apps do.
The timing of this announcement comes a little over a week before Wonder Woman 1984 is released in the US simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters. The expectation is that HBO Max subscriptions will skyrocket with the film’s release.
In addition, the entire slate of Warner Bros. 2021 films will also release day-and-date in theaters on HBO Max. The list includes Dune, The Matrix 4, The Suicide Squad, and Space Jam: A New Legacy, among others.
