Agents of SHIELD Episode 9 ‘Repairs’ Review and Recap 6 Qs

Agents of SHIELD Episode 9 'Repairs' Review and Recap 6 QsAfter last week’s Thor/Asgard-centered episode, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD goes back to the “hero/gifted person of the week” formula and the return to form is welcome. We get some backstory on the mysterious Melinda May, and Coulson has to sacrifice one of his precious antiques to help save the day.

Oddly enough, this episode would have been better served if it had aired before Halloween, but that’s just me.

4. What is it about? (**Spoilers Ahead**)
The show opens with a young woman (Seay) trying to buy paper towels at a gas station and the attendant (Gehrman) is angry because she was part of an accident that caused the death of his friend. As the attendant tries to confront her, things fly off the shelves and the gas pumps all come dislodged. For some reason, there is a stack of burning newspapers and the gas station goes boom.

Level 7 is sent to retrieve the woman who may have a gift of telekinesis. We learn that she was the safety inspector at a facility that was experimenting with a Particle Accelerator (which seems to be a theme in all comic book-based TV shows these days), and a terrible accident caused the death of four people.

As expected, the townspeople blame her and her “gift” is causing them harm. Coulson (Gregg) and Melinda May (Wen) collect the young woman and take her aboard The Bus for questioning/study, and we learn that she has a spirit following her who is causing the chaos.

The spirit, the spectral remains of Tobias Ford (Baker), who died in the accident, grounds the bus and is also able to herd the team into separate rooms, locking them in. Skye is able to figure out that Tobias caused the accident because he was in love with Hannah, and by damaging the particle accelerator, she would come to his department, allowing him to be close to her. Now, Tobias is protecting Hannah, and he perceives the team as a threat to his love. This leaves only Melinda May to not only get Hannah off The Bus–saving her teammates–but to also help the “spirit” come to grips with his feelings for Hannah and help him find his way to the other side.

There are two side stories this week; one centers upon Melinda May’s origin, as each clique aboard The Bus has a different story of why she’s called, “The Calvary.”

The other side story focuses on the Wonder Twins–Fitz and Simmons–trying to prank/haze Skye into SHIELD, with terribly predictable results.

5. Any revelations, tie-ins, easter eggs, etc.?
A reference to the events at the end of Thor: The Dark World; the gas station in the beginning is a Roxxon Oil station, which is used in the comic book Marvel Universe; use of the term, “616,” which is tied to Earth-616, or the Earth used in true Marvel Continuity. It can be argued that the mutants–currently owned by Fox Studios–do not operate on Earth-616.

6. Will we watch next week?
No, as the show takes a week off. It will return on December 10 with an all-new episode, and yes, we will be watching.
