Weekend Box Office: Babylon A.D. Falls to Thunder

Tropic Thunder sits atop the weekend box office gross for the third week in a row, this time beating out newcomer threats Babylon A.D., Disaster Movie and Traitor.

Overall box office results fizzled for the last weekend of the summer, even including estimates for Monday’s holiday gross. Through Sunday, Tropic Thunder won the Fri-Sun cum with only $11.5 million while Babylon A.D. came nowhere near its estimated $70 million production budget with a take of $9.7 million.

The Dark Knight continues to perform but shows signs of weakening with an $8.7 million gross. That’s still good enough for the number three spot and will keep Dark Knight in theaters for several weeks to come.

Traitor, starring Don Cheadle and Guy Pierce, came in fifth with $7.9 million. It beat out Death Race which took a huge 50+ percentage drop from its opening week. Disaster Movie (read our review) was just that, a disaster, scoring only $6.1 million.

Suspiciously absent from the top 10 is Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which came in 11th place with $2.9 million. Rumors of a November DVD and Blu-ray release will likely pan out to be true after a likely quick box office exit.

The complete top 10 is as follows.

  • 1. Tropic Thunder: $11.5m
  • 2. Babylon A.D.: $9.7m
  • 3. The Dark Knight: $8.7m
  • 4. The House Bunny: $8.3m
  • 5. Traitor: $7.9
  • 6. Death Race: $6.2m
  • 7. Disaster Movie: $6.1m
  • 8. Mamma Mia!: $4.4m
  • 9. Pineapple Express: $3.4m
  • 10. Vicky Cristina Barcelona: $3m

Next week will see the Nicholas Cage remake Bangkok Dangerous face no real new competition.
