Tonight’s Season 3 finale of Sherlock on PBS Masterpiece Theater follows one of the most unusual episodes in the drama’s history that played more for character development than solving a mystery. To recap ‘The Sign of Three,’ Sherlock finds himself the best man at John and Mary’s and all the complications and responsibilities that come with that. It’s not easy for Sherlock, especially considering that John hasn’t quite fully accepted his partner’s two-year absence. Nevertheless, Sherlock has a speech to write and dance to choreograph, and he’s not about to fumble either of those tasks.
Sherlock is so engrossed in getting his best man’s speech correct that he interrupts Lestrade and Donovan during a big arrest of a criminal network with a series of texts just so he can get their input and advice. The foreshadowing here is that the failed arrest may come back to bite both Sherlock and Watson at some point in the future.
Before the wedding, Mary insists that John take Sherlock out on a case and so he does. It concerns a member of the Queen’s Guard, played by Alfie Enoch of Harry Potter fame, who thinks that a photographer has taken a little too much interest in him. The humor in this is that Sherlock finds the photographer’s body in a locked shower and then asks the wedding guests for guesses on how the person was killed considering there was no murder weapon.
As the flashbacks continued, Sherlock tries mightily during John’s bachelor night to not get drunk while John does the exact opposite. Drunk Sherlock Holmes is one of the most brilliant things this series has yet to unveil, and I speak for all fans that it’s something that needs to be seen again, whether the character is afraid of hangovers or otherwise.
The wedding finally comes and Sherlock delivers an amazing best man’s speech that is as much an endorsement of John as it is an examination into his own soul. Sherlock properly guesses that Mary is pregnant, and then the episode ends on a sour note with Sherlock realizing the bridesmaid he should dance with already has a partner, so he abruptly leaves.
The official synopsis for tonight’s Sherlock Season 3 finale reads, “Since Sherlock’s return, it seems that no one great criminal has stepped up to challenge him. But ‘His Last Vow’ reveals an evil mastermind at work deep beneath the surface. Charles Augustus Magnusson is just a businessman, a newspaper owner, but somehow he owns the most powerful people in the western world. Now Sherlock and John Watson find themselves facing off with this slippery, loathsome man – and with one of his victims.”
