To recap last week’s episode with some spoilers, Lord Gillingham has taken a strong liking to the recently widowed Mary. But Mary is wise to his game and endless advances, always finding a way to fend them off. Even as he pushed for marriage, Gillingham is unable to persuade Mary that she and he should be together, and ultimately Mary leaves for York with Tom and Gillingham realizes he has essentially lost.
Edith probably caused the most shock and awe last week when she was presented with a contract by her boyfriend, Michael Gregson, and went on to sign over her authority to him without reading so much as a single sentence in the contract. Keep in mind that Gregson is married and was about to go to Germany, possibly never to return. This will surely come back to bite Edith as Aunt Rosamund has predicted.
Poor Ana has become somewhat reclusive after being brutally attacked two weeks ago. Lord Grantham, Mr. Bates and even Mary have picked up on this strange behavior, but they can’t seem to figure out what has happened that has caused her demeanor to change. Anna even tells Mr. Bates that she is around him too much and moves upstairs, which lights a fire in him to figure out what is going on.
Tom won’t have Edna to worry about anymore after her fate last week. Edna had been pushing Tom to propose to her and even lied about being pregnant with his child. Tom didn’t fall for it and instead relayed this to Mrs. Hughes, who in turn gave Edna a piece of her mind and sent her packing.
The official synopsis for tonight’s new episode of Downton Abbey, the fourth of this fourth season, reads as follows, “Questions of estate management pit Mary and Tom against Robert, while Bates’ questions about Anna’s suffering pressure Mrs. Hughes. Thomas installs a new ally, Violet hires a new gardener, and Alfred cooks up some ambition.”
Downton Abbey Season 4 Episode 4 will premiere in the U.S. tonight at a start time of 9/8c on PBS Masterpiece, followed immediately by an all-new episode of Sherlock Season 3.
