The PBS drama Downton Abbey warned of content not suitable for all audiences last week and delivered a controversial act in the second episode of Season 4 during its U.S. debut. Though Episode 2 first premiered in the UK back on early October of last year, U.S. audiences got to experience the unfortunate turn of events first hand and with Episode 3 tonight on PBS Masterpiece, will witness the aftermath. To recap what happened, the Crawleys hosted a massive house party at Downton Abbey with Lady Mary finally starting to come out of her shell after her husband’s death.
There are many little subplots in motion during the party including Jospeph Molesley being offered an amazing new job opportunity and Rose, with her best intentions at heart, tries to take the party to the next level and instead inadvertently causes heartache via past memories for Lady Mary.
The party comes to its peak when opera singer Dame Nellie Melba performs. While the performance is going on, Anna’s headache reaches the point where she needs medicine so she heads downstairs to find some. While she’s down there, Anna is confronted by Lord Gillingham’s valet Green who questions her choice in men.
What happens next is completely unexpected as Green brutally beats and rapes Anna as the episode concludes. It’s a controversial sequence for Downton Abbey, but one the producers stand by given these types of act really did happen a century ago. Nevertheless, it was brutal and sent shockwaves through the fan communities.
Here’s the official synopsis for tonight’s new Downton Abbey episode, “Love is in the air at Downton Abbey and darker emotions too, as Mary, Edith, Tom, and Anna each struggle with a dilemma. Things are cooking for Ivy and Alfred, and heating up in London.”
Downton Abbey Season 4 Episode 3 premieres in the U.S. tonight at a start time of 9/8c on PBS Masterpiece, followed immediately by the U.S. premiere of Sherlock Season 3.
