Universal Unveils Blu-ray Plans; First Titles in July

Universal Studios Home Entertainment President Craig Kornblau has announced the studio’s anticipated Blu-ray roll-out plans including television, catalog and new theatrical day-and-date properties expected this upcoming holiday season.

The first Universal Blu-ray titles will arrive on July 22 and be comprised entirely of the current Mummy franchise: The Mummy, The Mummy Returns and The Scorpion King. The fourth Mummy film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, will be released on Blu-ray before year’s end following its summer theatrical run.

Other day-and-date new theatrical titles confirmed for release in 2008 include Doomsday due this summer, followed later in the year by Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army; The Incredible Hulk remake starring Edward Norton; Timur Bekmambetov’s Wanted; and Meryl Streep in Mamma Mia!.

A sample of catalog releases coming to Blu-ray in 2008 include American Gangster, Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Miami Vice, End of Days, U-571 and Land of the Dead.

Heroes: Season One, previously released on HD DVD, will re-appear in high-def on Blu-ray August 26. Also on that date, Universal will roll out Heroes: Season Two on Blu-ray, just in time for the premiere of season three on NBC.
