Ubisoft corners Driver franchise

Ever wonder what happened to Atari’s “Driver” series? Ubisoft today announced the acquisition of its rights along with the technology rights and assets from Driver’s creator, Reflections Interactive Limited (for 24 million dollars, in case you had to know). This portfolio addition will give Atari a legitimate entry in the racing genre, though how the series will evolve under their wing remains to be seen.

“We are thrilled with this acquisition which will allow us to add a prestigious title to our catalog and to enter into the driving games segment, one of the most important segments in the gaming industry. With more than 14 million units sold throughout the world, Driver® is one of the most successful brands in the history of video games. We look forward to leveraging the unique knowledge of the Ubisoft studios to ensure that Driver will be one of the leading brands of the next generation of consoles,” said Yves Guillemot, chief executive officer of Ubisoft.

We probably won’t hear another peep out of Ubisoft regarding “Driver” until maybe next year’s E3. Remember Veejay Singh golf using the Links engine? Yeah, we’re still waiting.
