Twilight Director Talks Up Blu-ray Plans

On the verge of her film’s super-hyped release, Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke spoke during a press junket about how Blu-ray Disc high definition resolution is impacting the film’s visual effects.

In Twilight, vampires are not killed by sunlight as typically portrayed in stories. Instead, their skin “sparkles” with great intensity, so much so that it makes them stand out from humans and forces their hand in choosing where to live.

Hardwicke has already seen the “sparkle” effect on Blu-ray and is pleased with the results stating, “it looks really great. I was worried how that would translate.”

While she seems pleased there is still room for improvement. Apparently there is a chance ILM will punch up the effect exclusively for Blu-ray Disc and DVD, with Blu-ray obviously making the most of it.

“We are looking into to going back to ILM and pushing that scene a little further for the Blu-ray Disc. We have about a dozen deleted or extended scenes to put on the DVD, and I made a couple crazy montages of all the times the vampires kiss or attack someone and of all the human hijinx, and I’ve done a visual remix of the movie for the DVD (and presumably Blu-ray) also.”

Twilight on Blu-ray Disc will be released by Summit Entertainment in the first half of 2009.
