True Blood returns to HBO tonight via the Season 6 premiere ‘Who Are You, Really?’ with Brian Buckner taking over the showrunner position from series creator Alan Ball. What exactly that means for the vampire drama revolving around faeire Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) remains to be seen. Based on the previews for the upcoming season there will still be lots of sex, nudity, violence and blood.
At the conclusion of Season 5, the Vampire Authority’s damage had been done even as Bill (Stephen Moyer) helped take them down and destroy them. True Blood factories have been mostly or entirely destroyed and the public perception about vampires is they are now a threat to humanity and need to be eliminated.
Bill seemingly merged with Lilith to become “Billith” (a fan name), a bloody creature with great power. One theory moving forward is that Sookie will be able to save Bill from his power trip. Right now it looks like Bill is more of a threat to Sookie and the core cast than any heavily armed human with a vampire grudge,
Jason (Ryan Kwanten) was part of a raid on the Vampire Authority that saw the Bill transformation and is now high tailing it away. He and Sookie will be seeking out Warlow, a mysterious vampire responsible for the death of their parents. A new character played by Rutger Hauer may or may not be Warlow; no one knows for sure just yet.
Elsewhere in Bon Temps and the surrounding areas, Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) and Tara (Rutina Wesley) shared a smooch, Luna (Janina Gavankar) appears to have bit the dust, Alcide (Joe Manganiello) is now the packmaster, and fringe characters like Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis), Arlene (Carrie Preston), Andy (Chris Bauer) and Sam (Sam Trammell) will need new subplots to explore.
Tonight’s Season 6 premiere of True Blood on HBO gets underway at 9/8c in the time slot recently vacated by the Season 3 conclusion of Game of Thrones. HBO offers a free live online streaming option for tonight’s episode exclusively to subscribers via HBOGo here on tablets, mobile phones, laptops and other Internet connected devices. A big death has been promised this season and rumors suggest it may be Eric Northman (Alexander Skarsgard). I would be shocked if he meets his true maker tonight.
