Thor: The Dark World Trailer Puts Jane Foster in Harm’s Way

Thor: The Dark World Trailer Puts Jane Foster in Harm's WayIt’s no mistake that the first trailer and official footage from Marvel’s Thor: The Dark World looks like an episode of Game of Thrones at times. The film’s director, Alan Taylor, a Game of Thrones director himself, has left his fingerprints for gritty battles and a much more subdued Asgard all over this first snippet of footage.

From what we can make of the trailer, Earth is endangered when the Dark Elf ruler Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) and Kurse (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) attack with a massive “thing” (Marvel aficionados can probably identify it) that looks like it stepped off the set of Tron. Before this thing arrives,Thor (Chris Hemsworth) returns to Earth and whisks his love Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) back to presumably Asgard.

Bringing Jane to Asgard doesn’t sit too well with Sif (Jaimie Alexander) who seems quite jealous of the mortal’s presence in one shot. As seen in behind-the-scenes videos and now confirmed with the trailer, Sif will get to take our her aggression against the Dark Elves.

Rather than summon his Avengers pals for reasons we don’t yet know, Thor calls upon the help of his imprisoned brother Loki to defeat Malekith and promises to kill Loki the moment he betrays him. Loki responds in a devilish tone as only Tom Hiddleston can deliver, “when do we start?”

The trailer teases that Jane Foster will either meet her end or be taken away by Malekith as Thor watches on, helpless. I get the impression that what we’re seeing is some clever editing and she isn’t necessarily killed.

Thor: The Dark World is the second film in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe Phase 2 and arrives in theaters on November 8, 2013.
