Last night’s episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead ‘Walk with Me’ changed up the show’s format by introducing the fortified town of Woodbury and its inhabitants, lead by the two-faced Governor (David Morrissey). In fact, Rick and his group at the prison were completely absent, replaced by Andrea and Michonne’s encounter with Merle and eventual forced relocation into Woodbury.
‘Walked with Me’ played as the appetizer for bigger things to come. The Governor clearly has issues with his collection of zombie heads in aquariums and willingness to gun down a U.S. military outfit in cold blood. He’s as protective of his town as Rick is of his group. Either men will do whatever it takes and kill whoever they have to in order to keep their own safe and maintain their leadership position.
Then there’s Milton, a lab rat geek-type working under the Governor in trying to understand the zombies. He’s likely trying to reverse the disease as the direction of the Governor as hinted at by the questions directed at Michonne and Andrea, and the lingering shot of the Governor’s wife and daughter captured in an old still photo.
A lot was said in the way characters reacted in ‘Walk with Me’ to hint at what’s to come throughout the rest of Season 3. When the Governor and his hit squad returned from gunning down the soldiers, and the Governor delivered his bs speech, Michonne’s stare said she didn’t buy it for a second. Andrea, however, bought it hook, line and sink, and is beginning to warm up to the Governor’s manufactured hospitality. Milton, however, walked away with a disappointed look on his face when the Governor told him privately about what had gone down. Mark my words: Milton’s loyalty will play a big role in the Governor and Woodbury’s fate when the time comes.
In the next episode ‘Killer Within,’ The Walking Dead begins to tell stories from both big camps within the same hour block. Rick and his group will face a threat at the prison that has even Lori firing off rounds, while the Governor will continue to woo Andrea much to Michonne’s shagrin. At this point we’re all counting down the days until Rick and the Governor enjoy their first face-to-face.
