AMC has renewed their hit series The Walking Dead for a third season for what is expected to be an order of at least 13 additional episodes. An exact episode order was not included in AMC’s announcement, and likely won’t be determined until after the Season 2 finale.
The renewal came as no surprise after The Walking Dead: Season 2 premiere attracted 7.3 million total viewers, 5 million of which fell into the 18-49 demographic that advertisers covet. AMC announced the renewal a day removed from the second episode’s airing which indicates the ratings drop-off was either minimal or nonexistent.
Uncertainty surrounded the second season of The Walking Dead after showrunner Frank Darabont was ousted over the summer during production. Any creative impact over his departure wouldn’t be felt until the latter half of Season 2, and even then it may be impossible to spot considering the season was already planned out before he departed.
