The Proposal Celebrates Weekend Box Office Win

The Proposal starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds nearly doubled the box office take of this past weekend’s other newcomer, Year One, en route to an easy first place finish.

With the help of Ryan Reynolds and his dizzying array of facial expressions, The Proposal’s estimated $34.1 weekend pot makes it the highest grossing opening of Bullock’s career. Expect more formulaic romantic comedies with more of an emphasis on “comedy” to flood theaters next year.

Year One with Jack Black and Michael Cera managed $20.2 million for a fourth place place. While not huge numbers, Sony should be happy it fared better than Land of the Lost which looks to retain its summer flop crown for the time being.

The Hangover continues to wake up to good news with a strong second place finish at $26.9 million. Pixar and Disney’s Up also continues to draw big crowds with an additional $21.3 million.

If Up continues on its current pace it should surpass Star Trek in overall gross. Right now Up stands at $224 million which Star Trek is $15 million ahead at $239 million. The gap is shrinking every weekend.

The complete box office results for June 19-21 are as follows:

  • 1. The Proposal: $34.1m
  • 2. The Hangover: $26.9m
  • 3. Up: $21.3m
