To state the eventual replacement for Steve Carell on ‘The Office’ will have his or her hands full would be a gross understatement. How do you successfully replace a character whose nimwit antics have served as the show’s centerpiece since its inception?
According to producer Paul Lieberstein, the answer is not to replace Carell but to go in a completely different direction. That answer could be the unlikeliest of choices, a king of badass-ery, Harvey Keitel.
“I haven’t started any talks with his people, but Harvey would do a great job — a very different energy,” Lieberstein told E!. Online. “And we don’t want to bring in another Michael, having someone play a very similar character because we have such a high regard for Steve.”
That “different energy” could turn ‘The Office’ upside down, literally. Harvey’s delivery and demeanor couldn’t possibly be any more different than Carell and would likely rub off the wrong way on the rest of the cast.
Not that ‘The Office’ even needs a replacement for Carell. There’s still the possibility that the strong and very recognizable ensemble could continue on with one or two smaller additions for the “promoted from within” new boss to annoy.
