Disney has formally announced that new 3D version of The Lion King will first be released theatrically on September 16, followed by a Blu-ray 3D bow on October 4. Additionally, The Lion King will also be available on traditional 2D Blu-ray the same date, while a single-disc DVD edition will roll out on November 15.
The Lion King 3D theatrical run will only take place for two weeks. Once it ends, the only way to see The Lion King in 3D will be to purchase the Blu-ray 3D edition.
October 4 will also see the release of The Lion King Trilogy on Blu-ray, a massive 8-disc set that includes The Lion King on Blu-ray 3D, 2D and DVD, The Lion King 1 ½ on Blu-ray and DVD, and The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride on Blu-ray and DVD.
Though The Lion King coming to Blu-ray 3D has been known since early January, a definitive list of bonus features remains elusive. All the latest press release promises are “interactive features and bonus content, including a new set of hilarious animated bloopers.”
