Warner Bros. has officially announced that Christopher Nolan’s Inception co-stars Joseph-Gordon Levitt and Marion Cotillard have joined the cast of the writer/director’s third Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises.
News of the pair joining the project has been floating around for weeks, if not months. Speculation as to who they might be playing is now proven to be way, way, way off the mark.
Gordon-Levitt will play John Blake, a cop working under Commissioner Gordon who is assigned to special duty presumably in response to something that happens in the film. He had been rumored to be playing Alberto Falcone aka The Holiday Killer.
Cotillard is also playing a new character, Miranda Tate. She is a member of the Wayne Enterprises board and hopes to help Bruce Wayne overcome his grieving and continue his philanthropic Gotham endeavors. She had been previously thought to be playing Talia ah Ghul.
Tate’s closeness to Wayne sets up a possible love triangle in The Dark Knight Rises. I’m purely speculating, but Tate could be the woman Bruce Wayne falls for while Selina Kyle is who Batman finds himself drawn to.
The Dark Knight Rises stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Cotillard and Gordon-Levitt. Additional rumored cast members include Juno Temple, Daniel Sunjata, Diego Klattenhoff and Ben Gorman. Production commences in Pittsburgh this summer.
