UPDATE: We’ve confirmed with Sony that ‘The Da Vinci Code’ will not be released on Blu-ray Disc day-and-date with the standard DVD version on November 14. As such, the title has been removed from Sony’s press assets website and we’ve moved it into the undated tab of future On Tap DVD releases.
Earlier today, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment issued a press release announcing ‘The Da Vinci Code’ would be available on DVD November 14 in a two-disc set. No mention was made of a Blu-ray Disc version; however, the announcement did state the featurettes filmed for the release were all shot in high definition – a tell-tale sign of an imminent Blu-ray release.
Blu-ray enthusiasts have speculated for weeks and even months that ‘The Da Vinci Code’ would be a day-and-date release on Blu-ray with the standard definition version. Yet, no mention is made of Blu-ray in today’s press release, and Video Business Online quotes Sony senior VP Fritz Friedman as stating, “We really felt it really required an appropriate amount of time to create the best Blu-ray release possible (in reference to the high definition extra features)… It will be well worth the wait.” Video Business took this statement as meaning ‘The Da Vinci Code’ will not be released on Blu-ray November 14.
Now we’ve uncovered a listing for the Blu-ray version at Sony’s press assets website, complete with cover art (click through the listing below for a high resolution image) and a November 14 release date. Is this date reliable as it comes from the horse’s mouth? Or, is it a misprint by a webmaster with itchy keyboard fingers? Stay tuned; we’ll update this news article with the definitive answer as soon as we have it. The truth is out there.
