Sony’s brass must be pleased with Marc Webb’s work on The Amazing Spider-Man as they are moving forward with a sequel a full year before the first film arrives in theaters.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 release date will be May 2, 2014, a little less than two years after The Amazing Spider-Man hits theaters on July 3, 2012. Andrew Garfield will obviously return, but any additional casting decisions are not yet public.
James Vanderbilt, who penned The Amazing Spider-Man, will also be tackling the sequel story and script.
Sony’s early move to lock in a release date for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 makes the sequel the first confirmed superhero film for 2014. Marvel’s Thor 2 and Iron Man 3, as well as Warner’s Man of Steel, are on tap for 2013.
