Taylor Swift has her eyes on the role of real-life singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell in Girls Like Us, a Sony and Di Bonaventura Pictures movie adaptation of the book of the same name from author Sheila Weller.
Per Variety, Swift has been “circling” the Mitchell role for several months as other actresses have been auditioning for the other two main roles of Carole King and Carly Simon. Alison Pill of Midnight in Paris fame has reportedly already auditioned for the King role.
Swift has stuck her feet in Hollywood’s water on a couple occasions but has yet to land a big live-action role. Her first appearance in front of the camera was alongside Taylor Lautner in Valentine’s Day as a ditzy high school student. She also appeared in Miley Cyrus’ Hannah Montana: The Movie and lent her voice talents to the hugely successful Universal animated feature The Lorax.
More recently, Swift’s music appeared on the soundtrack for The Hunger Games, but she did not appear in the film in any capacity.
If Taylor Swift lands the Joni Mitchell role in Girls Like Us, it could prove a springboard into more feature film projects. First, Sony needs to green light the film from writer John Sayles and director Katie Jacobs, which they are expected to do later this year. Until then, Taylor Swift will continue to dominate the country airwaves.
