The Twilight Saga: New Moon trailer has arrived and answers a few burning Jacob questions at the forefront of Twilighters’ minds while doing little to get this writer excited about the sequel.
The first question answered is for the ladies via a blatant shirtless Taylor Lautner shot. Yes, he has been working out for the Jacob role. No, I would not call him “huge” as I am told the book depicts his sudden growth.
To further “reveal” Jacob, the trailer shows his full transition into a protective growling wolf. I didn’t expect to see that secret shared so early in the game. In fact, I’d wager the shot still has a ways to go.
Twilight message boards are bound to light up about how “fake” the wolf transformation comes across. There is little subtlety in the scene as a running Jacob turns wolf in the blink of an eye. Something visually is “off” that needs fixed which many months of post-production ahead can address. Devastator in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen came a long way between trailer glimpses. So can Jacob.
Though director Chris Weitz appears to be staying faithful to the New Moon book, the line delivery in this trailer is anything but emotionally charged. Again, much of what Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are saying is looped in during scenes that don’t quite match so the verdict is still out. There is more than enough time for Weitz to apply his own stamp rather than follow in Catherine Hardwicke’s footsteps of directing painfully delivered dialogue.
It was a bold move by Weitz and company to show off the werewolf effect so early in the film’s production. Even with that unexpected surprise, New Moon will need to move much further from the original to get me amped up about it.
