Syfy’s Being Human Series Premiere Preview

Tonight Syfy is premiering the first episode of ‘Being Human,’ a newly scripted series inspired by the ongoing British supernatural series bearing the same name. The following preview with images and a video at the conclusion will get you ready for the big premiere.

The premise behind ‘Being Human’ is that a werewolf, vampire and ghost share a small brownstone in Boston. Each struggles to find their place in a mostly human world, caught between the burdens of their supernatural states – of which none of them asked for – and a desire to be as human as possible.

Comprising the trio of supernatural roommates in ‘Being Human’ are Sam Huntington as the werewolf Josh, Meaghan Rath as the ghost Sally, and Sam Witwer as the vampire Aidan. The fourth recurring core castmember is Mark Pellegrino who plays a police officer with an agenda not quite in sync with departmental policy. Most of you will immediately recognize Mark as mysterious and powerful island protector Jacob from ABC’s ‘Lost.’

In the two-part premiere ‘There Goes The Neighborhood,’ ‘Being Human’ sets a dramatic tone unwilling to settle into a singular comfort zone. In a moment’s notice it can go from scary to soapy, bloody to dramatic, or funny to cheesy. The unbalanced approach helps it from becoming tagged as another Twilight ripoff, but also makes it feel at times more like a CW network series than Syfy’s own.

I have screened the first three episodes of ‘Being Human’ and the premise is full of promise. There is much to learn about the backstories of each core character and their supernatural “species,” as well as some interesting new characters introduced in each of the three episodes designed to stir the brownstone pot. Even if you don’t fall in love with the premiere there’s a fantastic nail-biting cliffhanger that will have you coming back in a week for part 2 regardless.

Ultimately it will be the characters who drive Being Human and Syfy has chosen their American cast well. There’s potential for the series to take off especially with women much like Warehouse 13 has during the past two summers. That show has become the most-watched series ever on Syfy and the cornerstone from the re-branding exercise a year-and-a-half ago.

Below are a series of ‘Being Human’ promotional and episodic images, prefaced by a video that explains the show in roughly two minutes.

Being Human premieres exclusively tonight at 9/8c on Syfy.
