The imminent arrival of Star Wars Rebels, an all-new CGI-animated series from LucasFilm set approximately five years prior to Star Wars: A New Hope, means a new villain will soon be terrorizing a galaxy far, far away. That villain is The Inquisitor, and as you might imagine, Hasbro will be giving this new baddie the plastic treatment to coincide with the series premiere in fall 2014.
Yesterday StarWars.com unveiled a first look at The Inquisitor in 3.75-inch action figure form, complete with his dual-bladed lightsaber and black Imperial armor. The figure sports five points of articulation and is sculpted in the same style as the animated look from the television series.
It’s important to note that The Inquisitor figure revealed is being labeled as part of the “Star Wars Rebels Saga Legends” action figure line. This potentially means that a more articulated version might appear in another line, such as the more collector-focused “Black” series. Five points of articulation is fine for kids, but collectors will have a hard time striking any dynamic lightsaber poses with articulation no better than the original Kenner Star Wars figures from the late 1970s and 1980s.
There’s a lot of questions surrounding how The Inquisitor will fit into the Star Wars mythos. He’s obviously been trained in the way of the Sith, but he must be a secret apprentice of Darth Vader as there can only be technically two Sith alive at one time. The Clone Wars, whose showrunner Dave Filoni is also working on Rebels, often operated with multiple agents of evil that Darth Sidious eventually trimmed down to the appropriate amount.
We will get a better look at additional characters and vehicles from Star Wars Rebels when the first wave of product is expected to be fully unveiled during Toy Fair in February.
