Zac Efron and Ryan Gosling are the latest names to enter the Star Wars Episode VII casting rumor mill that will be spinning faster and faster the closer we get to the start of principal photography at Pinewood Studios, U.K. in early 2014.
According to Latino Review, Ryan Gosling and Zac Efron are on Disney and director J.J. Abrams’ radar for a role in the next Star Wars film. One of the young actors met with Disney last week, and Gosling is said to be on the consideration list to play Luke Skywalker’s son. That’s right; Luke’s son, not Han and Leia’s.
This source also claims that Leonardo DiCaprio had met with Disney for a Star Wars role but is no longer in the running. He is reportedly eying a different Sci-fi project in the early stages of development and that project is Robotech.
Efron and Gosling are no strangers to the Disney family. Gosling is a former member of The Mickey Mouse Club, while Efron shot to stardom as the male lead in the High School Musical films.
We are likely on the cusp of the first official casting announcements from Disney and Lucasfilm for Star Wars Episode VII. Though the film was a no-show at Comic-Con last week, Disney has their own D23 convention running from August 9-11 that offers a big stage to make a big announcement.
This upcoming weekend is Star Wars Celebration Europe in Germany. It’s doubtful Disney will make any Episode VII announcements there, instead opting to preview the upcoming Star Wars Rebels animated series coming to Disney XD next year. If any Episode VII news does break from Europe then I would expect it to be the form of Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford being officially announced as returning to reprise their roles of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and Han Solo, respectively.
Zac Efron and Ryan Gosling’s names in contention for a role in Star Wars Episode VII is just the beginning. Expect many more names to be tossed about in the coming months.
