Spartacus: Vengeance Full Comic-Con Trailer Aims for the Jugular

Starz brought a minute-and-a-half of blood, sweat and sex to Comic-Con with the first footage from Spartacus: Vengeance, the second season of the show following Spartacus: Blood and Sand which first aired over a year ago in the first quarter of 2010.

This Spartacus: Vengeance trailer, which Starz released online over the weekend, marks more than just a sneak peek at the upcoming season. Star Andy Whitfield, who played Spartacus in Blood and Sand, had to leave the show for medical reasons. Upon his exit he wished that the role would be recast and the show would go on. It was, and it will.

Taking Whitfield’s place as Spartacus is Australian actor Liam McIntyre. North American audiences might recognize him from a role in HBO’s The Pacific. In this trailer, he looks strikingly like Whitfield and seems to do an admirable job filling a big set of shoes.

Spartacus wouldn’t be Spartacus without an ample helping of blood, violence and sex, and in that respect this trailer delivers. Swords and spears through the neck and mouth seem to be the “kill of choice” as Spartacus and his fellow gladiators leave the arena and set out into battle.

Spartacus: Vengeance will premiere on Starz in January 2012.
