Playstation 3 has always been a cutting edge Blu-ray Disc player since the day it launched price-wise, and now it has another leg up on many competing players.
On Tuesday, Sony made available firmware version 2.10 for download via the Playstation Network. The firmware update includes support for Blu-ray Disc Profile 1.1, required for secondary video and audio support, otherwise known as true picture-in-picture. The update does not include BD-Live i.e. support, a feature HD DVD has enjoyed for some time now.
The only other Blu-ray Disc player with Profile 1.1 support available now is the svelte Panasonic DMP-BD30. With Playstation 3 support, Profile 1.1 is now accessible by over 2.5 million console owners.
The first titles with Profile 1.1 content will begin rolling out in the next few weeks, including Sony’s Resident Evil: Extinction and Lionsgate’s War on January 1, followed by Fox’s Sunshine Lionsgate’s 3:10 to Yuma a week later. Additional titles will continue to be announced.
