On a Friday when yet another major winter storm slammed the northeastern states, Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island stood atop the daily box office in its second weekend of release with an estimated $6.7 million. Its weekend take should pass $20 million and easily be enough to finish first.
A pair of newcomers had hoped to scare or laugh Shutter Island from its pedestal but both fell short. Kevin Smith’s Cop Out with Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan came in second with $5.9 million and is expected to wrap the weekend somewhere under $20 million.
The Crazies held strong with Cop Out and matched its $5.9 million opening Friday. Horror fans came out in force after better than average reviews for the remake of George A. Romero’s original film with the same name. Horror films tend to experience bigger drops on Sunday which should place The Crazies in third place for the weekend.
