Showtime proved today that they are very interested in supporting the new drama/thriller Penny Dreadful in their post-Dexter lineup by ordering up a second season before the first reaches its finale.
The current freshman season of Penny Dreadful starring Eva Green, Josh Hartnett and Timothy Dalton recently aired its fourth episode of eight. For Season 2, Showtime is expanding their order to 10 episodes, a two-episode bump and show of confidence that there are many more scares and fantastical iconic monsters to deliver.
“Picking up Penny Dreadful was one of the easiest decisions I’ve made,” announced Showtime president David Nevins with the renewal announcement. “John Logan has deftly created an epic series that has drawn raves from a wide-range of audiences from quality drama lovers to critics, to hardcore genre fans.”
Ratings have been solid for Penny Dreadful thus far with three-quarters of the 4.8 million average viewers per episode watching either online or via on-demand. Nevins calls this viewership “authenticated” and is pleased with a strong turnout in the 18-34 demographic thus far.
Production on Penny Dreadful Season 2 will commence later this year in Dublin with a premiere date in 2015.
