Sharknado Surfs Twitter Wave Directly Into Regal Movie Theaters

Sharknado Surfs Twitter Wave Directly Into Regal Movie TheatersApparently a green lit sequel set in the Big Apple isn’t the next stop as Syfy’s social media phenomenon Sharknado is still spinning up a storm and has set its sights on Regal Cinemas movie theaters.

Regal Entertainment Group will outfit 200 cinemas across the country at midnight on August 2 to play the deliberately cheesy and over-the-top natural disaster and creature feature Sharknado for anyone who has a desire to see the shark-spewing tornado on the big screen. Two of the more prominent cinemas include Regal L.A. Live Stadium 14 in downtown Los Angeles and Regal Union Square in New York City.

Sharknado stars Ian Ziering, Tara Reid and John Heard with the amazingly absurd and ludicrous premise that a giant tornado swoops up sharks from the ocean and spits them into populated areas on land. It is by no means be the first B-movie that Syfy has developed and air and won’t be the last, but it did reach crack the social media-sphere in a way no former silly monster movie mash-up had.

In the seven hours during which Sharknado first premiered on Syfy, Twitter recorded 604,000 total tweets related to the film. The explosion of chatter online didn’t translate to ratings as they were marginal at best, yet the hype remains and helped spur the Regal Cinemas midnight showing deal.

Sharknado fans who want to own the Sharknado Blu-ray or DVD can already lock in an inexpensive pre-order ahead of the film’s September 3 home video debut.
