Update: An announcement trailer has been added at the bottom of this post.
The wait for the Steven Spielberg War World II holocaust drama Schindler’s List to make its way to Blu-ray has been dragging on for seemingly forever. After all, it did win seven Academy Awards including Best Film and Best Director.
This year mark’s the film’s 20th anniversary making it the perfect time to finally release it in high definition. Universal Studios Home Entertainment agrees as this morning they announced Schindler’s List starring Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes and Ben Kingsley is coming to Blu-ray and DVD combo pack on the Academy Awards-friendly release date of March 5, 2013.
The unfortunate irony of the announcement coming today is that Leon Leyson, the youngest Jew saved by Oskar Schindler from the list of 1,100, died over the weekend at the age of 83. He was age 13 when he was ultimately saved by Schindler.
For the Schindler’s List Blu-ray debut, Universal has restored the film from its original negative with Spielberg himself overseeing the process. The result is a 1.85:1 1080p transfer that promises to make the film look better than it ever has, along with 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio.
Bonus features included on the Blu-ray and DVD combo pack of Schindler’s List include the following:
- Voices from the List: Featuring documentary with testimonies from those who survived the Holocaust thanks to Oskar Schindler
- USC Shoah Foundation Story with Steven Spielberg: The director shows how filming Schindler’s list inspired him to establish the USC Shoah Foundation
- Digital copy and UltraViolet
I will update this post as soon as Amazon begins offering their pre-order for Schindler’s List on Blu-ray. In the meantime, enjoy the cover art below.
