Fox has rolled out the official website and with it the first full-length trailer for S. Darko: A Donnie Darko Tale; a direct-to-video sequel of Donnie Darko that no one really asked for but we’re getting it anyway.
After viewing the trailer a couple times I must admit it could have been a lot worse. Daveigh Chase, who played Donnie’s sister Samantha in the original and reprises her role to lead the sequel, adds a smidgeon of authenticity to an otherwise “unauthorized” film with no involvement from the original’s director Richard Kelly.
There also seems to be a heavy play on the sci-fi aspect expanded upon in the director’s cut of Donnie Darko which recently arrived on Blu-ray. Since I’ll likely see this in the comfort of my home with a cold beverage in my hand, you gotta love the B-movie style special effects and “the world is going to end” McGuffin. It may just take a good buzz to appreciate any unintended campiness.
