Robert Downey Jr. Returns to Comedy in Due Date

Robert Downey Jr., on the heels of unveiling Iron Man 2 at Comic-Con, will join Zach Galifianakis from The Hangover (and likely Hangover 2) in the upcoming Todd Phillips comedy Due Date.

Per Variety, Downey will play an expectant partner who must race cross-country with a mismatched partner (Galifianakis) before his child is born. Due to their distaste for one another, Phillips calls the film’s premise “a buddy comedy without the buddies.”

The film marks the first return to comedy for Downey Jr. since playing Kirk Lazarus in Tropic Thunder.

Production on Due Date is scheduled to begin October 6 with an anticipated June 2010 release. For Phillips, it will serve as a sandwich film between the first Hangover and its sequel, set to begin production in October 2010.
