MGM Home Entertainment will release the original 1984 cold war-inspired film Red Dawn on Blu-ray on October 9, 2012 to coincide with remake’s theatrical debut.
Red Dawn made “Wolverines!” a catchphrase and helped launch the careers of Patrick Swayze, Lea Thompson, Charlie Sheen, C. Thomas Howell and Jennifer Grey. John Milius penned and directed a what-if scenario of Russian soldiers invading American soil, and a band of high school students who form a resistance to fight back.
The Red Dawn remake is scheduled to arrive in theaters on November 21, 2012, after languishing in limbo due to MGM’s bankruptcy proceedings. Like the original, it features a collection of up-and-coming stars including Adrianne Palicki (G.I. Joe: Retaliation), Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games), Isabel Lucas (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) and Chris Hemsworth (The Avengers) who battle against foreign invaders on American soil – this time North Koreans.
