Indiana Jones has always been considered a larger than life character. Next month, he’ll literally become one up on the gigantic IMAX screen.
Beginning September 7 and lasting for exactly one week, Paramount Pictures is re-releasing Steven Spielberg’s 1981 classic Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark exclusively on IMAX screens. That’s a giant Harrison Ford, giant Nazis, and one heck of a massive boulder coming at you that will be just as intimidating in 2D than anything Hollywood puts out today in 3D.
Purists will be happy to learn that Steven Spielberg has not tinkered with Raiders of the Lost Ark for its IMAX release. There’s no 3D, no additional effects and no additional sounds. The only change made for IMAX is a bump up in the surrounds to take advantage of the large venue.
The arrival of Indy on IMAX screens is to help promote the September 18 debut of the first three Indiana Jones films on Blu-ray. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade are being joined by previously released in high definition Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in the Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures Blu-ray set.
For the generation that grew up watching Indiana Jones, the debut of Raiders of the Lost Ark on IMAX is a chance to experience Indiana Jones in his finest outing, in a bigger than life way. That generation’s kids, who are old enough to see Indiana Jones, can see a classic up on the big screen and spark new interest in the adventuring archaeologist from a younger generation.
Let’s be honest; Kingdom of the Crystal Skull didn’t pan out the way we all thought it would.
