Sony has revealed a release date, specs, and unusual pricing for the second version of its Playstation 3 slim console. How unusual? Try more expensive than the current Playstation 3 slim model that will be phased out in the coming weeks.
There will be two versions of the new trimmer and slimmer Playstation 3 model here in North America. The first is priced at $270 – $20 more than the current low-end slim model – and will come packing a 250GB hard drive. For $30 more the hard drive doubles to 500GB. Both models will be available in Charcoal Black or Classic White finishes. I can only assume using the word “classic” is referencing the original Playstation 1 as this is the first white Playstation 3 model I am aware of.
In Sony’s defense of its pricing, both new slim Playstation 3’s will come packaged with Uncharted 3: Game of the Year Edition and the hard drives are packing more space than the current models (320GB and 160GB compared to 500GB and 250GB, respectively). Either one would make someone happy if opened up on Christmas morning.
The new Playstation 3 slim console is designed to make the first slim model feel fat in comparison. Per Sony it is roughly 20 to 25% smaller and more than 50% lighter than the current slim model. It’s leaner, meaner, and slightly more expensive.
The 250GB Playstation 3 slim version 2 will go on sale next Tuesday, September 25. The beefier 500GB model arrives a little more than a month later on Tuesday, October 30.
