Possible ‘Sleeping Beauty’ Blu-ray Disc Release Date

Last October, your editor-in-chief made a short excursion to Hollywood to participate in the Blu-ray Disc festival. It was during this festival that Gordon Ho, Executive Vice President of Worldwide Brand Marketing and Product Management for Walt Disney, calmly told myself and James Plath of DVDTown.com that Sleeping Beauty was ready for Blu-ray and would be released in October 2008.

Since then, we’ve come to learn Sleeping Beauty will be the first Platinum Series Blu-ray title from Disney and span two discs. We’ve also learned the reason Sleeping Beauty is the first Platinum Series catalog title is because the original aspect ratio is widescreen, while the majority of other “classics” are full frame 1.33:1. Since the general populace associates widescreen with high definition, the choice was easy for Disney.

Although October is still more than half a year away, retailer Amazon.com has already added an active pre-order for Sleeping Beauty on Blu-ray. Better yet, the listing not only offers a price, but an October 7 release date as well.

The official Sleeping Beauty Blu-ray release announcement is still months off so this date can easily change between now and then. When the announcement is made, we’ll have all the juicy details and high resolution cover art to share.
