Pirates of the Caribbean 5 Screenwriter Hired

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is still a half year from setting sail and already Disney is looking forward to the next adventure with Jack Sparrow and the Black Pearl.

Deadline is reporting that Disney has locked up a deal with scribe Terry Rossio to pen Pirates of the Caribbean 5. Rossio has worked on all previous Pirates films but did so with writing partner Ted Elliott. Pirates 5 would be his first solo stab at the franchise.

Committing to a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film this early is about as safe a profitable bet as exists in Hollywood. On Stranger Tides will make a boatload of cash as Johnny Depp’s extensive fan base just can’t get enough of Captain Jack Sparrow. Pirates 5 could be Sparrow by himself on a deserted island talking to a rock and it would still be one of the top grossing films of the year.

Disney will need to lock up Depp and possibly director Rob Marshall before turning Rossio’s screenplay into the next Pirates film. Deadline further reports that Disney is already after Marshall for Pirates 5 and Depp has a deal structure in place but nothing is a go yet.

Depp recently commented publicly that he would be more then willing to return for another Pirates of the Caribbean film. As long as Depp is willing to play the pirate then Disney will likely continue to churn out sequel after sequel.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is set for release on May 20 in 3D and 2D.
