Update: We called a few local Old Navy stores and got the same response from all. They do not know the quantities of New Super Mario Bros. U for tonight’s Black Friday doorbuster promotion, or they have been instructed not to give that information to customers. All I can tell you is that quantities are limited and I hope everyone who tries to get one is able to.
Two years ago, Old Navy teamed up with Microsoft to offer a free copy of Dance Central on Black Friday to help promote the then-new Kinect Xbox 360 peripheral. Two years later, Nintendo has stepped in and hooked up with Old Navy for a Wii U and Mario promotion of their own.
Beginning tonight at midnight, Old Navy will be offering a free copy of Nintendo’s New Super Mario Bros. U game with any purchase $40 or more as a doorbuster deal. There’s no catch or tricks involved. If you manage to beat out enough other people for the freebie, it’s yours.
The trick will be just that: beating other people. Old Navy expects shoppers to start lining up well before stores open at midnight tonight when the promotion begins. With quantities of New Super Mario Bros. U limited, an employee will come out prior to midnight and distribute a single wristband to each family in line. One family cannot clean out multiple copies of the game. If you get a wristband, you know you’re getting the game and simply have to turn it in when checking out at least $40 worth of stuff.
Old Navy will also be offering a Black Friday freebie in the form of a Wii U standard console, one per store. If you make it to Old Navy tonight and survive the line, be sure to enter the contest for a chance at Nintendo’s new console.
I plan on giving a couple Old Navy stores a call a little later today to get an idea of how many New Super Mario Bros. U games we’re talking about, and will update this article with the results of those calls.
