Netflix Goes Disc-Free and 5.1 Surround on PS3

Netflix is finally breaking the surround sound barrier on October 18 when they debut Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 audio on select streaming television shows and movies via Sony’s Playstation 3 console.

Additionally and on the same day, Sony will upgrade PS3’s firmware to revamp the Netflix interface on PS3 and ditch the need for a separate instant streaming disc, provide some instant streaming content in 1080p high definition and increase their library of content with subtitles. What content will support 5.1 audio, 1080p high definition and subtitles will likely not be known until the overhaul goes live on Monday.

Netflix has also promised to roll out surround sound on other unnamed platforms in the future, though gave no timetable or additional details on those plans at this time.
