Will Ferrell and Brad Pitt led Megamind on a march to the top of Friday’s box office results while Due Date with Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis wasn’t far behind.
Megamind rode the 3D animation to $12.5 million on Friday and stands to finish somewhere between $40 and $45 million through Sunday. Dreamworks last big animation 3D film, How to Train Your Dragon, clawed up $12.1 million its opening day en-route to a $43.7 opening weekend debut.
Todd Phillips’ Due Date easily secured second place with $12.3 million and stands to pull in around $30 to $35 million for the weekend. The other newcomer, For Colored Girls by Tyler Perry, snagged third with $7.4 million and is pacing towards a weekend gross north of $20 million.
Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours starring James Franco opened in four theaters, two in Los Angeles and two in New York, and sold out every showing. Fox Searchlight is taking a cautious approach on how to widen the release of Boyle’s first feature since Best Picture winner Slumdog Millionaire.
