Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs once again proved audiences are hungry for animation by spinning to $24.6 million in its second weekend at the box office.
The mere 18.8% drop from its first weekend was easily enough for Meatballs to top second place finisher Surrogates starring Bruce Willis. With only $15 million made thus far and an estimated $80 million budget, Surrogates will need to rely on overseas business and home video to be deemed a success or not.
Other newcomers included the remake of Fame which opened in a disappointing third with $10 million after receiving lukewarm reviews, and the sci-fi horror thriller Pandorum which came in sixth with $4.4 million.
The complete weekend box office results for September 25-27 are as follows:
- 1. Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs: $24.6m
- 2. Surrogates: $15m
- 3. Fame (2009): $10m
- 4. The Informant!: $6.9m
- 5. I Can Do Bad All By Myself: $4.8m
- 6. Pandorum: $4.4m
- 7. Love Happens: $4.3m
- 8. Jennifer’s Body: $3.5m
- 9. 9: $2.8m
- 10. Inglourious Basterds: $2.7m
Next weekend Zombieland will have the best shot of keeping Meatballs from a three-peat with an over 1,000 screen advantage over other new opening films including The Invention of Lying, Whip It and the Toy Story / Toy Story 2 3D double feature.
