Nintendo and Lego are taking a page out of the Toys for Bob and Skylanders Giants playbook to deliver the first piece of DLC content to Lego City Undercover for Wii U early next year.
As revealed in the latest Nintendo Direct video, Nintendo has partnered with Lego for the Lego City Police High Speed Chase toy set. This set, which includes an exclusive Chase McCain minifigure modeled after the protagonist in Lego City Undercover, will be the only way to get a pair of vehicles and at least one exclusive mission that can be used in the video game.
The way it works is anyone who purchases Lego City Police High Speed Chase will find a unique code in the package, possibly on the car’s license plate as indicated in the Nintendo Direct Video, that will unlock the unique vehicles and missions in the game. As you might expect, the police car and sports car included in the Lego toy set are part of the unlockable in-game content.
Right now Nintendo is offering an “early 2013” release date for Lego City Undercover on Wii U. I take that to read mid-to-late January considering Pikmin 3 is a big first-party Wii U release in March, and Nintendo will want to take advantage of all the new Wii U’s that will be unwrapped this holiday season.
