Lionsgate has unveiled plans to release Kevin Smith’s “unlikely” horror film Red State on Blu-ray and DVD October 18. If you want to see it earlier, you can catch it On Demand beginning September 1.
Red State stars Melissa Leo, John Goodman, Michael Parks, Kyle Gallner and Kevin Pollak. It premiered at Sundance earlier this year but when it came time for studios to bid for the theatrical distribution rights, Smith flung them all a middle finger by purchasing the rights himself for $20.
Smith kicked off a national tour to show the film on March 5 at Radio City Music Hall. Over the next several months his SModcast Pictures reportedly spent less than $500 in advertising for the tour, while the film grossed over $1 million from only 15 engagements. A wider theatrical release will kick off September 23.
Red State on Blu-ray will be presented in 1080p video and 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio. The bonus features do include Smith’s Sundance shocker:
