J.J. Abrams Will Direct Star Trek 2

J.J. Abrams has decided to step aboard the Enterprise’s deck again and will direct Star Trek 2 for Paramount Pictures.

The news broke last night via Vulture that Abrams had committed to the project and is already well into pre-production work. Trade magazines quickly confirmed the news and Trek fans instantaneously rejoiced.

The Star Trek sequel script, by Alex Kurtzman, Damon Lindelof and Roberto Orci, has been underway for months and, according to insiders, will be polished off by month’s end. Production is expected to get underway this winter.

Star Trek 2 was originally slated for release next June but was pushed back to winter 2012 to offer more time to get the script completed. Taking its prime summer slot was another sequel, Paramount’s G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation.

All the major Enterprise crew members including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban and John Cho are expected to return and join J.J. Abrams to embark on the new mission. Details of what that mission will entail remain under tight lock and key.
