Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures starring Harrison Ford on Blu-ray finally has a release date of September 18 from Paramount Home Entertainment and LucasFilm, putting the four-film collection about two-and-a-half months out from arriving in stores.
Included in the Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures Blu-ray set are all four films in the Indiana Jones series: Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the latter of which is already available on Blu-ray.
Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark is the jewel of the set and as such, Paramount has enlisted director Steven Spielberg and sound designer Ben Burtt to supervise a complete restoration of the classic adventure film. The video restoration began by scanning the original film negative at 4K, then meticulously going through the scan frame-by-frame and cleaning up any debris or damage.
The sound restoration unearthed the original 1981 original master mix, which had been in storage since its first and only use. New stereo surrounds were created from the mix, along with new effects in stereo to replace the former mono versions. Additionally, bass was redone to “modern specifications” and dialogue and small technical flaws were fixed or improved.
To be clear: Spielberg has not made any “changes” to the film like George Lucas did to Star Wars. The restoration was to restore the film to its original glory, not add new elements.
The result of the restoration is a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio mix and 1080p video (on all four films) that we hope lives up to our lofty expectations.
New bonus features will be included in the Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures Blu-ray set, though what they are remains unknown at this time. Previously released documentaries, interviews and featurettes will also make their way onto the Blu-ray discs.
