HBO gave the drama series Enlightened starring Laura Dern a second chance after its freshman season pulled in light ratings. A second season of similarly small audiences forced the pay network to finally pull the plug.
Today HBO confirmed that Enlightened has been cancelled after its second season on the air. From Mike White and Laura Dern, who both star in the show, Enlightened was a hit with critics put never managed to attract the type of audience it needed to survive.
“It was a very difficult decision,” HBO said in a statement regarding the cancellation. “We’re proud of the show and we look forward to working with Mike White and Laura Dern in the future.”
Enlightened aired after Girls but only held roughly one-third of the audience from its lead-in hit. With newcomer Veep pulling in much stronger numbers, HBO made the difficult decision to let Enlightened go and will definitely be hearing about it from the show’s small but passionate fan base .
The second and now final season of Enlightened is already available for pre-order on DVD at online retailer Amazon.com. Though the first season received a Blu-ray and DVD combo edition, no much package has surfaced yet for Season 2.
