Warner Bros. Gravity starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock, along with Disney’s Saving Mr. Banks starring Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson and Colin Farrell, are certain to be two of the top selling Blu-ray and DVD releases later this winter and into early spring. Signs of their popularity are already starting to show up at online retailer Amazon.com where pre-orders for both are into full swing.
Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity made its cinematic debut way back on October 4 and has yet to be officially announced for home video by Warner, though we expect the official announcement to come as early as this upcoming week following the Golden Globes results. The reason for the delay is Gravity’s box office success and Academy Awards buzz has lengthened its theatrical engagement and will push its Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray and DVD debut into February or March.
Amazon began taking pre-orders for the Gravity Blu-ray 3D combo pack over a week ago but neglected to lower the price below the $44.95 SRP. Recently they finally knocked the pre-order price down to $29.99, and as a result, Gravity has peeked into Amazon’s Blu-ray top 10 bestsellers list at position 9 and is certain to go higher should it win at the Golden Globes later today.

Saving Mr. Banks is also in the awards season discussion and, like Gravity, has had its pre-order price lowered at Amazon all the way down to $19.49, a 41 percent savings over its list price. Ironically Amazon is promoting the Blu-ray pre-order of Saving Mr. Banks on the Gravity Blu-ray 3D listing page, as well as pretty much every Blu-ray listing page. As a result the P.L. Travers biographical film chronicling the making of Mary Poppins has cracked Amazon’s Blu-ray bestsellers list at position 10.
An official announcement and release date for Saving Mr. Banks on Blu-ray is expected to arrive within the next month or so.
